Chapter 10: Wandering in the Wilderness

“You have news, Severon?” asked Maradin, as the War Captain entered the throne room.

“Indeed, I have,” he replied.

Maradin glanced at the dignitaries gathered in the room and nodded his head at the door. Taking their leave, they bowed and exited hastily.

“Such a nuisance, these officials, both of Sora and Erinworld, come to suckle at the teat of the Dark Lord. I suppose, at least they know where their salvation lies,” said the Master Wizard.

Severon remained quiet. He was uninterested in such matters and considered them beneath him.

“Well, what say you, Lord Severon?”

“The King’s company has departed from Valcort and is heading to Blackthorn. Our forces will lay siege to them at the castle and rout them there. The magikora are gathering in Edinfor, but where precisely we have yet to determine. My thoughts lead me to Hogarth, but Edinfor remains closed to our forces since the initial attack on magic. The Princess, however, we have them last tracked to Elisemia, where we are less than a few hours behind their trail. All indications suggest that they will head to Vestin.”

“And so, we await them there?”

“Yes, my Master. They captured, interrogated, and then murdered one of my men. But all things being clear, they could not have learned of the true reason for our presence in Khotan, as they are still heading for Vestin.”

“A fine testimony to your man then, to have died bearing such a devastating secret to his grave. What more do we know of her companions? Surely a child cannot have eluded the great War Captain by her own accord?”

“Their host is small, according to sources who had spied them as they traveled from Erinworld to Khotan, they are about nine-strong, with Farook of the Border Troopers at command, a witch named Esmeralde and an Amazon named Nerine, a knitemaiden of Amazondia.”

“They have a formidable company then, Severon. Formidable and deadly. These names are well-known, even to me.”

“‘Tis nothing, they will all bleed and die. I do not discriminate. I will slaughter the old woman and the Amazon. The guardsmen are but a pleasure, nothing more.”

“Do not be foolish. And do not speak as a fool and ensnare me in your foolishness. The witch is one of the Illidain, and the Order of Zakari. She is also a member of the Magic Council. She is beyond the likes of you.” Maradin sighed. “Fortunately for you, I have one witch more than equal to Esmeralde. Behold, our new Witch Superior, Yasmula of the Black Snake.”

Yasmula stepped out of the vestry room behind the throne. Her long locks were gone, and her head was shaved revealing a horrible scar along the right side from her temple to the back of her head, above the right ear. The skin bore the scars of a severe scorching. Her complexion was paler than before. She wore a thick black cassock with a high collar around her neck and red pants underneath. She no longer carried a staff, but rather a scepter with a blade at the bottom end.
